Volunteer Nicaragua
Participation for SSLS Escuela Students
With assistance from SSLS school, while studying in the SSLS Weekly Program.
The following is a general list
-participating groups and their offerings may vary during the year.
- Casa de Niños Huérfanos (San Jorge) - Orphanage and schooling for children and youths run by an NGO with other similar projects in Rivas and Isla de Ometepe. Volunteer work available.
- Centro de Salud Gaspar Garcia Laviana - Provides health clinic and pharmacy, health education, family planning services. Volunteer opportunities to assist in vaccinations, first aid, birthings, etc.
- Colectivo de Mujeres "La Bahia" - Women's cooperative to organize women for work. Their services include natural medicine, artisan work and sewing, health and religious education. Volunteer opportunities to assist in natural health education activities and English classes.
- Escuelas de Educación Primaria y Secundaria - Rural elementary and high schools where you can see the educational conditions of Nicaraguan campesino children and participate in English classes or do volunteer contruction or maintenance of the schools.
- Hospital Gaspar García Laviana - Provides general hospital services with emergency and birthing facilities. Offers an opportunity to learn about the Nicaraguan health and medical system. Various volunteer work possible.
- Instituto Politécnico - SJDS's major local high school offers another opportunity to learn how the Nicaraguan education system operates. High energy environment with volunteer opportunities to assist in English and other classes.
- Movimiento Infantil Luis Alfonso Velasquez (MILAF) - Assists children and their families with tutoring, occupational training, English classes, advocates for the rights of children, teaches civics and social responsibility to children. Volunteer opportunities available.
- Niños Descapacitados - Works with disabled children and their families in and around SJDS. A moving experience for visitors. Volunteer opportunities.
- Newton Massachusetts/SJDS Sister City Project - Successful sister city project functioning since 1987 involved in building schools and other construction projects as well a providing supplies and volunteer workers in health clinics and schools.
